Next meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 7th March 2017.

Postcards

We are having a hands- on session making fabric postcards. There are no rules. You can choose your own subject. It could be holiday related or not, depending on your preferences.

You will need to bring a sewing kit. I will be providing postcards and scraps of fabric and assorted buttons and beads. The background pieces of fabric will be small so you probably won't need an embroidery ring. However, if you prefer to use one bring it along.

You will also need a glue stick if you want to attach scraps of fabric as we won't be using Bondaweb. Also, bring an assortment of embroidery threads and scissors.

Below are some examples of postcards I have borrowed from friends in the group. They should inspire you.

Llangollen visit

Mary Bridge one of our members enjoyed visiting the Llangollen exhibition and has kindly sent some photographs for the blog.

Yesterday we went to the Quilt Fest at Llangollen which we really enjoyed. We parked at the Int Pavilion to view the Contemporary group " On the edge" and 1001 nights challenge using fabrics from Kazakhstan.

Then we walked to the Museum to see Miniatures and the challenge Welsh Tailors quilt. I was inspired by a quilt made by a Welsh tailor in the 1800's from scraps and based on "the world around".

We popped into the library where there was some painting and textile work by Alison Corfield. Chatwins coffee shop did a good lunch.

This gorgeous quilt is by Mandy Hague.

Llangollen quilts

Mandy Hague ( one of our members) does some fabulous quilt work. She has kindly sent us some information about the latest show she is taking part in .It is Quiltfest in Llangollen. Details in a previous blog below.

I've attached a couple of photos taken of the "1001 Nights" collection just after hanging them. The quilts are in the Royal International Pavilion, Llangollen and can be seen until Sunday 19th February. They are in exhibition alongside an exciting collection of quilts from the Contemporary Quilt Group called "On the Edge".

Some notes about the "1001 Nights" quilts. This is a collection of 50 quilts with makers taking part from the UK, Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia. This was a biennial challenge to which ten UK quilters were invited for the first time. The rules of the challenge were organised by the Bohemia Patchwork Club from the Czech Republic. These asked each quilter to produce a quilt 50cm square using at least 4 or 5 fabrics from a selection of interesting fabrics provided by Wolfgang Eibisch. Mr Eibisch, a retired Director of Bernina for Eastern Europe, had collected the fabrics from markets in Kazakhstan. The resulting quilts have already travelled to Celle in Germany, St Petersburg and Moscow, as well as Prague. This is the first time they have been shown in the North of England. After this they will travel to Bramble Patch in Weedon, Northants before returning to Germany.

Bridget Bowie's talk

We all enjoyed a really interesting talk by Bridget Bowie yesterday. I think Bridget's thoughtful approach to her work gave us food for thought. I think we can all get a bit too complacent and just produce safe work.

Also, her work included stitching into paper and acetate so it's good to remember it's good to try out something new.
